SaaS en Cloud Computing staan duidelijk in de belangstelling. Je kunt geen blad meer openslaan of de voorbeelden vliegen je om de oren. Zowel toepassing als het belang neemt daarbij duidelijk toe. Niet alleen is het gebruik steeds meer acceptabel aan het worden voor bedrijfskritische toepassingen, ook het belang er van als drijvende kracht achter innovatie in de diensteneconomie wordt steeds duidelijker.

Deze ontwikkeling heeft voor Architectuur verschillende consequenties. Zo zal nieuwe functionaliteit steeds vaker bestaan uit een beperkte eigen ICT ontwikkeling en het integreren van allerlei (digitale) services van buiten. Een implicatie daarvan is dat architectuur ook steeds vaker organisatieoverstijgend zijn. Het ICT Innovatieplatform Software as a Service (IIP-SaaS) focust zich hier onder andere op.

Vanuit het NAF is onlangs een werkgroep opgericht die zich gaat bezig houden met de relatie tussen Cloud Computing en SaaS aan de ene kant en Architectuur aan de andere kant. Het eerste doel van de werkgroep is om een track te organiseren op het LAC2010 congres over dit onderwerp. Meer informatie over de werkgroep vind je hier:

Executive Summary

The combination of software and services is an important driving force behind the innovation of the service economy because it creates new opportunities for cooperation and integration of companies and their business models. This development leads to networks of companies acting as one dynamic and integrated virtual entity. More than 70% of our economy consists of services implying that this is an important economical factor.

This development creates new opportunities for companies and society, but also leads to new risks and vulnerabilities. Certain services will become single points of failure for many business chains. Dependency leads to less control over promised service levels and many new risks arrive. Although this observation is often quoted and subscribed, businesses are postponing appropriate action. In some cases the awareness of the dependability of external ICT services is completely lacking, while in almost all other cases the extent of their dependability is unknown. For compound services that often are crucial for our economy and society this is unacceptable. Therefore we have to shift the focus from the robustness of single service suppliers to the robustness of service chains.

In practice, organizations are trying to control this dependability by negotiating contracts and Service Level Agreements, thereby outsourcing the responsibilities. However, numerous incidents with ICT services have shown to erode the trust in ICT services by society, government and organizations[1]. By postponing appropriate action the risks of major incidents propagating through (trans)sectoral service chains are increasingly threatening the economy[2].

In this proposal, IIP-SaaS and IIP-Vitale ICT join forces to develop new tools to chart risks and vulnerabilities in the use of ICT between organizations and new patterns how to deal with these risks. The participating organizations in this project are from knowledge institutions (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, CWI, TNO, IBM) and from the service chain of government organizations, such as Logius, municipalities and the Belastingdienst. Also, but less intense, we will involve the telecom service chain with Vodafone and Ericsson. Around financial aspects there is involvement from the ING.

In this project, the ultimate goal is to prevent the decay of trust in ICT services, by (a) creating awareness for the interdependency of ICT services, (b) developing a method and tools for determining interdependency and the associated risks and (c) by providing patterns and products to take appropriate action. By executing this project based on the input and commitment of the IIP communities of SaaS and Vitale ICT, we are maximizing the probability in succeeding to achieve this ambitious goal.

Executive Summary

Service companies have traditionally used Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as an internal enabler of their processes. This is changing rapidly. More and more service companies from divers sectors like finance, transport, telcos and others are delivering a substantial part of their services through software channels based on SaaS. On the other hand we see the product software companies moving towards mixing services through their software with the help of SaaS principles. Both service providers and product software vendors move towards SaaS. They need to complement their competences in quality of service delivery with capabilities which traditionally belong to the other branch of industry. The result are more and more hybrid organisations that have aspects of services and software organisations. Software is an important Dutch export product and in the western world services are the major share of the economy. The successful combination of both leads to important opportunities for the Dutch economy.

This move leads to a different perspective for service companies and product software companies. Enhancing the capabilities to customize software and/or services on a client basis while maintaining efficient operation, maintenance and quality of service is crucial from a technical as well as a business perspective.

The project consists of two work-packages interwoven through seven phases: observation of pilots, review of existing knowledge, observation of simple market introductions, observation of complex market introductions with dynamics and customizations, consolidation of insights on dynamics and customizations, validation of best practices in the National Software Engineering Laboratory testbed, completion of dissertations. Across these phases, one work-package focuses on the business side of the dynamics of multi-tenant SaaS, whereas the other workpackge focuses on the technical side of customizations of multi-tenant SaaS.

From a business point of view it is clear that managing a service company is quite different from managing a product software company in relation to focus, key performance indicators, customer intimacy, innovation horizon and other business issues. Research is undertaken into the current processes of software and service companies moving into this hybrid world. Based on these processes and a literature study of best practices based in product software and service organizations a model is devised and tested in two service chains: government services and in financial services. The results will help service and software companies to better prepare for the business and organizational challenges that arise out of this hybrid situation.

From the technical viewpoint the focus is on the feasibility of customization realization techniques (CRT) in the context of large scale multi-tenant SaaS. CRTs are often based on the model-view-controller architectural patterns; in other cases they are based on the changes of connectors and components. From a software architectural perspective CRTs have been applied in various contexts. However, the behaviour of a CRT in a large scale and dynamic operational multi-tenant environment is unknown. In collaboration with industrial partners various dedicated testbeds will be arranged for a series of experiments to provide in-depth insights in CRT behaviour. This knowledge enables situational utilization of CRTs based on the extent of the customization. Furthermore, scenarios for dynamic optimization of performance balancing and tenant management can be empirically identified. The collective knowledge on CRT behaviour will support the Netherlands software industry to architect, develop and maintain customer specific Saas solutions on a large scale.

The relation between the technical issues and the business issues is identified and explored. The technical as well as the business aspects will be tested in the SaaS testbed where several default services are brought together in a test environment. The software vendors Exact and AFAS have committed their collaboration to the project with their infrastructure capable of serving thousands of customer organisations.

IIP-SaaS, GovUnited, TNO Informatie- en Communicatietechnologie, ICTregie en Rijksuniversiteit Groningen starten GovLab, een testbed voor open innovatie van eOverheidsdiensten

Vandaag zijn IIP-SaaS, GovUnited, TNO Informatie- en Communicatietechnologie, ICTregie en Rijksuniversiteit Groningen overeengekomen om een testbed voor open innovatie te ontwikkelen. Het testbed, genaamd GovLab, wordt een open omgeving waar overheidsorganisaties en bedrijfsleven gebruik van kunnen maken voor het ontwikkelen en testen van nieuwe overheidsgerelateerde SaaS-diensten (Software as a Service). Het initiatief past bij de ambities van de moderne overheid die betere dienstverlening aan burgers en bedrijven nastreeft.

Steeds meer diensten worden digitaal geleverd. Door het slim combineren van bestaande diensten zoals informatie uit gemeentelijke basisregistraties en Google Maps met iDeal of Twitter ontstaat een nieuwe wereld aan mogelijkheden. Het ontwikkelen van nieuwe toepassingen op basis van bestaande diensten en informatie biedt veel voordelen maar is complex door het samengestelde karakter. Zo heb je slechts een beperkt deel zelf onder controle en gebruik je functionaliteit die door anderen wordt geleverd. Aspecten als identiteit en autorisatie (met wie doe je zaken?) en beveiliging en privacy worden extra van belang, net als billing services (hoe krijg je je dienst betaald?) en flexibele interfaces (hoe sluit je gemakkelijk aan bij anderen?). Maar ook het testen in gedistribueerde omgevingen stelt speciale eisen.

Het is onze ambitie om gemeentelijke e-dienstverlening te optimaliseren door het bevorderen van onderlinge samenwerking en de inzet van moderne, gestandaardiseerde ICT-middelen. Het beschikbaar stellen van een testbed voor open innovatie van SaaS-diensten is dus geheel in lijn met onze visie dat ontwikkelkracht gebundeld moet worden om de kwaliteit van (overheids)processen te verbeteren. Belangrijk is dat we niet alleen inzicht krijgen in de technische (on)mogelijkheden, maar ook in de bijbehorende organisatorische, beheersmatige en juridische aspecten.

Gestart wordt met een aantal diensten en informatie zoals die door de overheid worden geleverd, waaronder de basisregistraties. Voor GovLab wordt gebruik gemaakt van een testomgeving die Logica heeft ontwikkeld voor GovUnited. In deze omgeving zijn diverse diensten beschikbaar zoals  fictieve  basisregistraties, (gemeentelijke) informatie en koppelingen met DigiD en Ogone. Steven Luitjens, Directeur van Logius en beheerder van DigiD, juicht het werken met testomgevingen zoals deze toe. “Door laagdrempelig iedereen in staat te stellen werkende oplossingen te laten zien die voortbouwen op wat er inmiddels is, stimuleer je de verdere ontwikkeling van elektronische dienstverlening. Ik laat me graag door nieuwe creatieve ideeën verrassen.”

TNO Informatie- en Communicatietechnologie en Rijksuniversiteit Groningen gebruiken de testomgeving momenteel voor het doen van onderzoek naar ICT gedreven diensteninnovatie. Hans Wortmann, Hoogleraar in Groningen en voorzitter van IIP-SaaS:  ICT staat aan de basis van diensteninnovatie. Samenwerking over ketens is daarbij van groot belang. Vandaar onze inzet om te komen tot een testbed waar allerlei sectoren hun samengestelde diensten kunnen ontwikkelen en testen.

Het GovLab is per direct beschikbaar. IIP-SaaS coördineert het gebruik. De betrokken partijen hebben het streven om het GovLab de komende tijd uit te breiden.

Eind oktober is het Europese EuroCloud initiatief (www.eurocloud.org) gelanceerd. EuroCloud is de eerste Europese community van en voor bedrijven en instellingen met belangstelling voor of belangen in SaaS en Cloud Computing. In de diverse landen zijn nationale EuroClouds in oprichting, zo ook in Nederland. Op 4 februari vindt de lancering plaats van EuroCloud Nederland. Cisco is zo vriendelijk het evenement te hosten en te sponsoren.

Maandag 16 November hebben we een interessante sessie gehad bij GovUnited waar we gesproken hebben over de SaaS oplossing die GovUnited maakt voor de gemeenten. Interessant waren vooral de praktische aspecten die je tegenkomst met SaaS: problemen en voordelen!

GovUnited is een organisatie opgericht door een groot aantal gemeenten met de doelstelling om gezamenlijk een e-government omgeving te creeren en te exploiteren. Deze omgeving is gebaseerd op SaaS technologie.
